Born in Amsterdam in 1921, Joop Sanders was an influential member of the Abstract Expressionism movement. He emigrated to the United States in 1939 after fleeing the Nazi regime, enrolling shortly thereafter at the Art Students League, during which he met and began working with Elaine and Willem de Kooning. In 1949, Sanders was the youngest of the 20 artists who founded The Club at 39 East 8th Street in Manhattan's Greenwich Village, which served as a vital meeting hub and exhibition space for Abstract Expressionists and the New York School of artists and writers. Sanders showed his work widely across Europe during the 1950s, including exhibitions alongside the Zero Group with Enrico Castellani and Piero Manzoni. In the later decades of his work, he developed a distinct monochrome style which he explored through sectional paintings and even sculptures, until his death in 2023. Throughout his eight decades as an artist, Joop Sanders left an indelible mark on the art world and American Abstract Expressionism at large.
