Referring to his background in the construction industry, Richards likes to say that he has learned how to “read” an old building, regardless of its origins or present condition. He expresses this special language by using common materials from building construction and then covering their time-worn surfaces with graffiti and other signs of transition. Richards emphasizes that he does not just build miniature copies of real buildings, nor are his works intended to be apocalyptic slums, although their weathered materials and realism and make it difficult to free yourself from a literal interpretation. Instead, he creates true sculptures with their own identities and, more importantly, their own inner lives secluded in their interior spaces.
This sculpture was exhibited at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts during Richards' 2019-2020 show Ruins, and has also been shown at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Virginia Beach. The piece measures 34 x 15 x 10" and weighs 65 lbs.
